DESCRIPTION:Karl Landsteiner naquit le 14 juin 1868 à Baden bei Wien\, en Autriche-Hongrie. Landsteiner a introduit la microscopie à fond noir pour le diagnostic de la syphilis primaire et a travaillé avec plusieurs associés sur les caractéristiques de Treponema pallidum. Ils décrivirent le mécanisme qui a conduit à la réaction de Wassermann. En collaboration avec Ernest Finger et d’autres\, il découvrit que l’antigène\, précédemment extrait d’un patient atteint de syphilis\, pouvait être remplacé par un extrait préparé à partir de cœurs de bœuf pour ce test.
